In this case, a quadrat is laid next to the line at intervals and an estimate is made of the abundance of the organisms in it. This might be percentage cover for those which are impossible to count as individuals (most plants and seaweeds) or numbers for those easy to count (sedentary animals like limpets or whelks).
This is a QUADRAT of the type we will use in this study:
The squares are 100 in number (10 x 10), the quadrat is 50 cm on each side thus 1/4 m2 overall area.
